-
Spring of 1967 saw the release The Turtles' Number One smash, Happy Together, which is a multi-platinum seller and has been featured in dozens of movies and television shows.
-
With the success of Happy Together, The Turtles moved away from folk-rock into "Good Time Music" genre, and subsequently scored Top 40 hits with She'd Rather Be With Me (which outsold Happy Together in Europe), You Know What I Mean, She's My Girl, Elenore, and 1969's You Showed Me.
-
By the early 1970s, The Turtles broke up amid a flurry of lawsuits with managers and their record company. Banned from using their real names, musical partner Mark Volman and Kaylan adopted the nom de plumes "The Phlorescent Leech and Eddie" (respectively) and joined Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention as vocalists.
-
Constantly reinventing themselves, Volman and Kaylan wrote and sang on the Strawberry Shortcake series, and several other similar projects. They also sang backup vocals (live and in-studio) for a wide variety of artists, including John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen, Alice Cooper, Duran Duran, The Psychedelic Furs, The Ramones, T.Rex, Blondie and many more. They even took a stint as enormously popular Afternoon Drive Radio Announcers in NYC.
-
By the early '80s, with the lawsuits settled in their favor, Volman and Kaylan reclaimed their real names professionally shortly before beginning a long stint as headliners of the annual "Happy Together Tour," which, year after year, remains one of the circuit's most successful tours.
